Writing your own spells

First of all let me state that the ideas and views here are my own and not the only way to do things. The purpose of this is to give you ideas to work from so that you can create your own spells. However, casting a spell or even raising energy to send out does not guarantee that you’ll get what you are after.

Casting a spell, some say, requires that you clean out a spot, cast a circle, call the quarters and the god and or goddess for your spell (if you choose to have one set deity for your circle). Others that say none of this is required to cast any spell. I believe that both are correct depending on what you are doing.

I believe some spells are a more directed goal (I want that boyfriend/girlfriend, that job, this amount of money) If you are casting a goal directed spell you should direct the energies. When you seek a more general goal, like a job, better health or protection, a deity's wisdom may be beneficial and it may be a good idea to include them in your workings.

When starting out it can seem overwhelming by the vast number of different types of spells. There are crystal spells, candle spells, rune stone spells, tarot spells, string magic, ritual spells, blood spells, poppet spells and a simple request or prayers. There are quite probably others but this list will give you an idea of the many types that are out there.

How to write your own spell

There are many methods people use to write their spells. Some just wing it and don’t even bother to write it down. They say the spell as it comes to them. A chanting spell works well in this manner. I do it that way but not too often. Some just write the spell down and don’t bother with all the little details because it works best for them that way. Most times I very carefully plan my spell before I cast it.

For me spell casting isn’t just the words you say but all the elements brought together for an effective spell. The work getting everything the way I want it focuses me and draws the energy to me that I will need. These aspects of the spell can include colors, moon phase, stones and herbs representing the desired out come, scents to burn while casting and assurance that all the four elements are present. When I am casting a non directed spell I don't use the four elements, only the fifth element, me!

So what do you need to cast your spell? First you need to make a spell outline. In it you will decide what you want to accomplish with your spell. For instance, a spell for success in something; job hunt, getting money, love relationship, list the items you will need for your spell. I have included some suggestions of items that are associated with certain properties or aspects, however, you may have some other items that have a personal significance for you.

In the case of success spells I would include stones like: Tigers Eye [Money, Energy, Luck], Marble[Success], Chrysoprase (an apple green colored stone)[Luck,Success, Friendship, Money], Amazonite ( a bluish green stone)[Success] Malachite (light and dark green streaked stone)[Business Success], Turquoise [Money, Love, Friendship, Luck]. Rock shops, gift stores and even your local zoo may have the stones you are looking for.
Herbs to add to spell or burn : Lemon balm (Love, Success, Healing), Cinnamon (Spirituality, Success, Healing, Power, Psychic Power, Lust, Protection, Love), Winters Bark (Success), Clover (Protection, Money, Love, Fidelity, Success), Ginger (Love, Money, Success, Power). Lemon balm, Cinnamon, Clover, Ginger can be found at almost any food store, Winters Bark maybe found at the local health store.
Colors like: Royal Blue to increase influence over the situation or goal, Brown for financial success, and perhaps Purple to expand the possibility of success in getting what you desire. This could be a piece of cloth, paper, a bag to hold everything together or even the color of the candle you are using.

Our own pages here have great information. http://groups.msn.com/askawitchcommunity/bookofshadows.msnw

Some other web sites to check out for information and purchase … http://www.magickalmeltingpot.com/Links and http://www.capricornslair.com/ and a web search www.google.com for stones can also give you more information.

Often people question if they should write their own spells. I feel you get the best results if you do. Even if it is just changing the wording of some other spell, it is more personal to you. However, many people get the results they seek with preformed spells from others. In any group of witches you will get firm believers in both ways.

Some people wonder if a spell has to rhyme. No, but it helps when memorizing a spell. This is why the witches rune or Wiccan Rede says that one's speaking needs to be in rhyme. If you memorize it no need to write it down and more difficult to be ‘caught’ in past times.

How long or short does it have to be? As long or as short as you want it to be and as intricate or simple as you want it. After all it’s your spell. I’ve cast spells that were 4 sentences long some that were a page long.

Always remember you are the best and only needed tool when using magic.
